چکیده

As recently discussed by Bar, Kiryati, and Sochen in [3], the Ambrosio-Tortorelli approximation of the Mumford-Shah functional defines an extended line process regularization where the regularizer has an additional constraint introduced by the term ρ|∇v|. This term mildly forces some spatial organization by demanding that the edges are smooth. However, it does not force spatial coherence such as edge direction compatibility or edge connectivity, as in the traditional edge detectors such as Canny. Using the connection between regularization and diffusion filters, we incorporate further spatial structure into the regularization process of the Mumford-Shah model. The new model combines smoothing, edge detection and edge linking steps of the traditional approach to boundary detection. Importance of spatial coherence is best observed if the image noise is salt and pepper like. Proposed approach is able to deal with difficult noise cases without using non-smooth cost functions such as L in the data fidelity or regularizer.

Video segmentation algorithm based on modified Mumford-Shah functional

In this paper we present a video segmentation procedure obtained minimizing a modified version of the simplified Mumford Shah functional used for image partition. This procedure uses a graph with spatial and temporal connections to model a video sequence. The temporal connections are defined pre-computing the dense optical flow using methods available in the literature. To simplify the function...

Mumford - Shah based registration A comparison of a level set and a phase field approach

Traditionally, different image processing tasks are mainly considered on their own. The main aim of this paper is a combination of registration [25,26,47,58–60], i. e., the spatial alignment of images and segmentation [19,53, 17,18], i. e., the recognition of edges and object contours in images. A proper registration depends on a good initial segmentation and vice versa. In this paper it is pro...

FMR image registration using the Mumford-Shah functional and Shape information

Motion can have a significant impact on signal changes in functional MR images, and affect the detection of real functional activation. To minimize the effect of motion on the fMRI signal, we propose a simultaneous segmentation and registration model. Due to T2 weighted signal loss, decreased resolution, and low contrast in fMR images, the feature to be used for realignment can't be detected re...

Curve Evolution, Boundary-Value Stochastic Processes, the Mumford-Shah Problem, and Missing Data Applications

We present an estimation-theoretic approach to curve evolution for the Mumford-Shah problem. By viewing an active contour as the set of discontinuities in the Mumford-Shah problem, we may use the corresponding functional to determine gradient descent evolution equations to deform the active contour. In each gradient descent step, we solve a corresponding optimal estimation problem, connecting t...

On the Statistical Interpretation of the Piecewise Smooth Mumford-Shah Functional

In region-based image segmentation, two models dominate the field: the Mumford-Shah functional and statistical approaches based on Bayesian inference. Whereas the latter allow for numerous ways to describe the statistics of intensities in regions, the first includes spatially smooth approximations. In this paper, we show that the piecewise smooth Mumford-Shah functional is a first order approxi...
